Qatar 2022 fell mid-season — every squad had played roughly a third of a club season at kick-off, so its raw minutes sit structurally lower than any summer World Cup. Its within-2022 ranking is valid; its share is not comparable to other years. The same timing effect applies within summer years to squads drawn from calendar-year leagues (South America, MLS, the Nordics, East Asia): their seasons are mid-run every June, so a high share there partly reflects season timing, not rust — which is exactly why the squads atop these tables (Ecuador, North Korea, Qatar) are calendar-league sides, and why this page stays descriptive.
Within each year: Spearman ρ between rust share and over/under-performance. Across all squads ρ=-0.04 — like value momentum, sharpness is no predictor.
